The Area Director's role is defined in the District Leadership Handbook because the Area Director is part of District Leadership. As the handbook indicates, each Area Director is "the direct liaison between the District and the clubs". The previous name for this role was Area Governor.

Area Directors are usually appointed by the District Director. They may not be appointed by Division Directors, although each Division Director's role is to supervise and support the Area Directors.
