The Chief Judge makes sure that a contest is run according to the Speech Contest Rulebook. The Chief Judge's role is described in that document.

Although audience members at a contest will normally not interrupt the proceedings, the Chief Judge will interrupt the contest as necessary to ensure the proper conduct of the contest. See also protest and disqualification.

A Chief Judge must have done Chief Judge training in order to serve. Chief Judge training is typically done at LACE. A list of trained judges and Chief Judges is available from the District's Chief Judge.

In order to be a Chief Judge at a contest, the Rulebook lays out several requirements, including the completion of a minimum number of speeches.

The Chief Judge will normally be chosen by the contest organizer except in cases where the district or division already has a designated Chief Judge.

A Chief Judge will typically choose the voting judges and will choose a Tiebreaking Judge.
