An International Speech Contest is one in which contestants compete to give the best International Speech, so-called because it is the only type of speech which has a contest at the International Convention. This type of contest occurs at each level, starting with club contests, and going all the way up to the World Championship of Public Speaking. A contestant must have completed six speeches in the Competent Communicator manual to be eligible to compete at any level.

The International Speech need not be on an international topic. It is usually (but is not required to be) inspirational with some humor. Typically, finalists display strong skills with respect to gestures, use of the speaking area, vocal variety and other aspects of public speaking taught in the educational program.
