Online meetings quickly became the only way to hold Toastmasters meetings beginning in March 2020 when the State of California declared a quarantine for most residents as the coronavirus spread in the state. As the state began to partially open up in May, clubs in the District were still not able to meet in person. Emerging research about coronavirus showed that people were more likely to get coronavirus if they spent substantial time in group settings.

The District adopted a platform called Zoom, and most clubs did also. Zoom proved adequate for the needs of clubs, although Zoom's sudden growth around the world in 2020 caused security issues and led to changes in the features in the spring of 2020 as the Zoom company dealt with the issues.

Toastmasters had previously allowed online clubs, so the concept was not totally new in 2020.

As of March 2021, a year later, clubs in the District were still holding meetings online. Zoom was the most-utilized platform, but some clubs used Microsoft Team, WebEx or GoToMeeting.
