The Opening of a speech is the beginning. One theory of beginning a speech is that it should start strongly, in order to rivet the attention of the audience quickly. The opening may done with words, but the Speech Contest Rulebook indicates that other things, such as gestures may also constitute an opening which will start the timing of the speech.
