A Prop is a physical object used by a speaker to assist in the speech. It can be practically anything - a pencil, a broom, a cell phone, etc. The speaker uses the object to illustrate a point, or assist in gestures, or otherwise make the speech more interesting. It differs from a visual aid, which usually contains words or pictures to accomplish similar goals.

Props may be used in contests if utilized within the rules of the Speech Contest Rulebook.

Props can be very effective unless they are seen as merely a gimmick to get attention without advancing the body of the speech.
